Self & Soul Center is a 25 acre nature preserve with biodynamic gardens and orchards located in beautiful Southern Oregon on scenic Wagner Creek, just minutes from both Ashland and Medford, Oregon. Established in 1990, the Center offers individual and couples counseling, meditation instruction, and retreats integrating psychology and spirituality. The Center’s biological ark project supports a wide diversity of noninvasive medicinal herbs and plants with attention to rare and endangered species.

Founders/Co-Directors

Rodney S. Birney MD, Dipl.ABPN

is a board certified psychiatrist specializing in psychotherapy, meditation instruction, mindbody medicine, and spiritual guidance.

Rod graduated from Skidmore college Phi Beta Kappa and Periclean Honor society. He graduated from George Washington University Medical School in 1985 and completed his psychiatry residency in 1989. While in his residency he completed 2 years of training with the Gestalt Institute of Phoenix, Arizona and 3 years in psychodynamic training with Ed Muller Ph.D. Due to childhood asthma he has pursued a life long interest in mindbody medicine, alternative therapies, and meditation.

Rod has been actively engaged in his own inner work for over 30 years. He continues to study modern psychology and ancient systems of wisdom.

As a spiritual guide he is a minister, student and teacher of Universal Sufism, a path of the heart, an interfaith approach to spiritual development. He is also a Certified Leader of the Dances of Universal Peace.

Suzanna (Yahya) Nadler M.Ed. L.P.C

works as a Movement Therapist and Group Leader, Body Poet, and Spiritual Guide. She loves dancing and received her masters in Dance/Movement Therapy from Antioch/New England Graduate School in 1983. After graduate school she has pursued training in developmental psychology, the Enneagram, the Diamond Heart work and Process Oriented Psychology.  For the past 20 years she has been counseling and leading groups blending a body focused psychology and spirituality.

As a spiritual guide, she is a minister, teacher, whirling dervish and longtime student of a Universal Sufi path. She leads and mentors the Dances of Universal Peace.

Recently she has begun performing her creative invention, Body Poetry.  She promotes creativity in her students through the use of authentic movement, body empathy, and the practice of being personal and present.

Jeff Hauptman - Professional Chef

is a fabulous chef with 30 years experience in restaurants and catering. Our "Famous" chef (Jeff has been mentioned in Oprah Winfrey's and Dr. Andrew Weil's books) is a delight to have in the kitchen. Courtney Dukelow - Massage Therapist

is a licensed massage therapist, practicing healing work since 1996.  She is certified in a variety of modalities including cranio-sacral therapy, body-centered therapy for trauma resolution, and deep tissue massage.   She recently returned to the US after living in Brazil for 2 years, studying shamanic-based healing arts.   Courtney can work in a variety of ways depending on your intentions for the session.
